Google Eliminates 3,000 Jobs

Google has eliminated an estimated 3,000 jobs, according to Trip Chowdry, analyst at Global Equities research.  The reason why it hasn’t been all over the mainstream media is because the jobs that have been cut have been those of contract workers.
Let’s stop kidding ourselves.  The only thing that differentiates contract workers who work 35+ hours [...]

Correcting the Specialization Assumption

Whenever you get the strange feeling at work that you’re being pigeon-holed, you probably are. This is because lots of managers subscribe to the idea that assigning workers to specific tasks will make the company more productive.
This idea of “specialization” is closely associated with Adam Smith, icon of free market theorists who, in his description [...]

The Conundrum of Today’s Corporate Thief

The World in 2025

The National Intelligence Council and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence have released a report, entitled “Global Trends 2025: A Transformed World,” focusing on global trends that they “judge probably will have a disproportionate influence on future events and possibilities” through the year 2025.  Some of the “relative certainties” the report cites include:

Wealth and relative economic [...]

“Douchebags” In Court

Two lawsuits have been filed on the question of whether publishing statements calling someone a “douchebag,” or that someone merely associates with such a person, is just rude, and not really something that anyone can legally do anything about, or whether it is something that is actionable under legal theories of libel, intentional infliction of emotional [...]

XM + Sirius Keeps Playing Footsie (and Pissing People Off)

Something’s not right here.  Back in 2005, Time magazine reported that Wall Street investors were “flummoxed” about Howard Stern’s true value and whether it would justify his $500 million, five-year contract.  Now they’re just pissed off–along with most everyone else, it seems, about their programming changes.  Between Howard Stern’s contract, the retarded way in which [...]

Approaching the End of ‘Meh’ at Coney Island

As Homer Simpson would say, everyone is all, “Meh” on Coney Island at the moment, but you just wait …
Picking up on my previous post on Atlantic City and Coney Island.  Let’s zoom in on Coney Island.
Over at City Room, the New York Times reports several designs under development, including a cable car ride [...]

Brother Can You Spare a Dime?: Depression, Hope, and Anger

“Depression, hope, and anger” are the words that Rob Kapilow, author of the new book “All You Have to Do is Listen: Music From the Inside Out,” uses to describe the thematic structure of the tune “Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?” from the 1932 musical New Americana.  The song was one of the top songs [...]

Atlantic City, Coney Island, and F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Jazz Age

A friend of mine emailed me today and told me that he was planning to go to Atlantic City but suggested that he was a little apprehensive because one of his friends said that Atlantic City is “a dump compared to Vegas.”  Not true.  I have to confess that I haven’t been to Vegas yet [...]

The School Snobs and the Imperialists Should Start Their Own Political Party

There are two types of people who should probably combine and form their own political party, while those who actually care about the American people get down to the actual job of governing.  I am talking about imperialists and school snobs. The electorate has already decisively removed the imperialists from office, in favor of an [...]
